This year marks the 50th Anniversary of the Broadway opening
of the Sound of Music, first produced a the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre
on November 16, 1959, with Mary Martin as "Maria", Theodore
Bikel as "Captain von Trapp" and Patricia Neway as the
"Mother Abbess." This dramatic tale of Stowe's most
famous family, the von Trapps, will be told for the first time
this century by the STG. The story is about Maria, a nun who leaves
the convent to become governess for the children of the widower,
Captain von Trapp, in Austria in the late 1930's. Together, they
overcome the challenges posed by life, love and the Nazis. Music
by Richard Rodgers, Lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II, Book by Howard
Lindsay and Russel Crouse. Suggested by "The Story of the
Trapp Family Singers."
