On an icy winter night in an isolated house in rural Vermont, a seasoned midwife named Sybil Danforth takes desperate measures to save a baby's life. She performs a cesarean section on a mother she believes has died of a stroke. But what if Sybil's patient wasn't dead and Sybil inadvertently killed her? Years after the incident and the manslaughter trial that followed, Sybil is confronted by her now adult daughter, Connie, who is in medical school practicing to be an obstetrician. Together they move from the present to the past - to the courtroom with the attorneys battling over the "facts" - to the bedroom where Sybil asked for the "sharpest knife in the house". Based on Chris Bohjalian's best selling novel, Midwives is a heart wrenching mother daughter story raising questions about guilt, acceptance, and what, if anything, we know for sure.

This special fall event pays tribute to two talented Vermont authors: playwright Dana Yeaton and novelist Chris Bohjalian. Both authors plan to be involved in this special event, including an opening night reception for all Stowe Theatre Guild sponsors and a Question and Answer session after the October 23rd performance.
