Show Proposals for the 2011 Season
-- Deadline now extended to October 31, 2010
Help the Stowe Theatre Guild celebrate its 16th
anniversary by submitting a show proposal for our 2011 season.
We especially encourage newcomers to the STG stage to submit proposals.
We’ll work with you to help make your dream production a
reality.
The theater season consists of four slots for shows. Each show
typically runs for three weeks, Wednesday through Saturday evenings
at 8 p.m. Matinees have occasionally been scheduled on Saturdays
or Sundays, if applicable or desired. . On occasion, the board
authorizes an additional fifth slot. Although the Guild does not
have the theater during December, the board is happy to work with
teams who want to organize holiday show.. .
Last season, we asked our audiences what they wanted to see. Here
are some of the responses: Fiddler on the Roof, Brigadoon,
Mame, Sweeney Todd, Mamma Mia, Jersey Boys, Producers, Grease,
Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, the Lion King, Wicked,
9 – 5, Spamelot, Rent, Carousel, Guys and Dolls, Hairspray,
West Side Story, Menopause the Musical, Evita, Man of La Mancha,
1776, Patsy Cline, Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, Show Boat,
State Fair, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, Gigi, Carousel, Joseph
and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat, Mary Poppins, Hair, Godspell,
the Wedding Singer, and plays written by Noel Coward and
Neil Simon.
You are free to propose any show for any slot, but
based on experiences from prior seasons, we have found that certain
types of shows tend to work better in some slots than others.
Slot #1: June 22nd - July 9th
Well-known shows involving larger casts (Camelot, Nine)
and younger, school age, actors. Big "family oriented"
musicals, like Annie and Oliver! have done very
well in this slot.
Slot #2: July 20th – August 6th
This is the most flexible slot. There is usually better availability
of cast members of all ages including high-school and college
students. Popular shows (My Fair Lady, A Chorus Line)
have done well in this slot as well as the slightly more avant-garde
productions (Into the Woods, Bat Boy).
Slot #3: August 17th - September 3rd
Musicals (Peter Pan, Cabaret, Chicago, Victor/Victoria, Hello,
Dolly!, The Music Man) work well in this slot. However, young
adult cast members (college and high-school students) are difficult
to find due to the start of the fall semester. In past seasons,
it has also been a challenge to fully cast shows which require
a large number of male actors. You may wish to consider a show
with a smaller or primarily female cast for this slot.
Slot #4: September 21st - October 8th
Comedies have worked well in this slot (Moon Over Buffalo,
Rumors, Sylvia, The Foreigner). The shows have been productions
with small casts geared toward a more mature audience. This slot
covers the prime foliage season so the audience tends to include
older, more conservative visitors.
Slot #5 October 19th – October 29th
If this slot is authorized, a small cast, family oriented, seasonal
drama or musical would work best. A concert version of a musical
might be a more manageable production. Since the number of performances
for these slots is limited, smaller budget shows would be ideal
The above represents past successes and
does not preclude consideration of new ideas for shows, shorter
runs, or special theatrical events.
How to propose a show:
1. Decide on the show and the core production team
of a producer, director, and music director, if applicable. If
you don’t have all these personnel but are interested in
the production, we might be able to help you organize a team.
Because these core positions are very demanding and critical to
the success of any show, each must be a separate person.
2. Send an e-mail to the Stowe Theatre Guild Show
Selection Committee at info@stowetheatre.com or mail to:
Stowe Theatre Guild,
P.O. Box 1381, Stowe, VT 05672
Include the following information:
- Name and author of the show you are proposing;
- Brief description of the show;
- Core production team members
- 2011 season slot you prefer (also advise if you are flexible
about taking another slot and if you can’t produce a show
in a slot because of conflicts);
- Your contact information (name, address, e-mail, telephone number)
and how you prefer to communicate (email, telephone).
3. You may be asked to attend a show planning meeting
to discuss your ideas for the show. Experienced producers and
board members would be on hand to answer questions and help you
create a proposed show budget. If needed, we may be able to provide
some suggestions to help you find additional production team members
(musicians, choreographer, stage manager, lighting, sets, sound,
costumes, props, etc.) to complete your team.
4. Submit Part A- Proposal Form and Part B- Budget
Spreadsheet along with a perusal copy of the script to the Show
Selection Committee. If you don’t know how to obtain a perusal
copy of a script and a score, e-mail the Selection Committee as
soon as possible, and we will help you obtain one. If you’re
proposing a musical, you will also need to submit a CD or cassette
of the music from the show.
Part A – Proposal Form
Part B – Budget Spreadsheet

Budget Spreadsheet - Sample
5. You may be asked to present your show proposal
to the STG Board. The Board will listen to the presentations,
select the best proposals for the available slots, and let you
know the results soon after the meeting. Many factors influence
the show selection such as the type of other shows proposed, scheduling,
and casting issues. If your show is not selected for this season,
we urge you to
resubmit your proposal or a new proposal for the following season.
Proposal Due Dates
STG will consider show proposals until all 2011 show slots are
filled, but submissions will be considered on a first come/first
serve basis. If you would like a particular show slot, we advise
you to submit your proposals for first round consideration.
This first round will take place September 1, 2010. (DEADLINE
EXTENDED TO OCTOBER 31, 2010)
Stowe Theatre Guild reserves the right to accept
or reject any proposal submitted and to continue to solicit proposals
until all the slots are satisfactorily filled. The Stowe Theatre
Guild Selection Committee looks forward to hearing from you.
