Show Proposals for the 2010 Season

Stowe Theatre Guild will celebrate its 15th anniversary in the historic Town Hall Theater in 2010. If you have a great idea for a show, please submit a proposal! We especially encourage newcomers to the STG stage to submit proposals. We’ll work with you to help make your dream production a reality.

STG continues its efforts to simplify the process of submitting show proposals, especially for potential producers and directors who may be new to the STG stage. A show planning meeting has been added to answer any questions you may have about producing a show for STG or about creating a realistic budget for your proposed show.

The theater season traditionally consists of four slots for shows. Each show typically runs for three weeks, Wednesday through Saturday evenings at 8 p.m. Matinees have occasionally been scheduled on Saturdays or Sundays, if applicable or desired. The possibility of an additional "Holiday" slot during the week between Christmas and New Year's Eve has also been considered.

You are free to propose any show for any slot, but based on experiences from prior seasons, we have found that different types of shows tend to work better in some slots than others.

Slot #1 – June 16th to July 3rd
Well-known shows involving larger casts (“Camelot,” “Nine”) and younger, school age, actors. Big "family oriented" musicals, like "Annie" and "Oliver!" have done very well in this slot.

Slot #2 – July 14th to July 31st
This slot has been filled for the 2010 season. It is the most flexible slot. There is usually better availability of cast members of all ages including high-school and college students. Popular shows (“My Fair Lady,” “A Chorus Line”) have done well in this slot as well as the slightly more avant-garde productions (“Into the Woods,” “Bat Boy”).

Slot #3 – August 18th to September 4th
Musicals (“Peter Pan,” “Cabaret,” “Chicago,” “Victor/Victoria,” “Hello, Dolly!,” “The Music Man”) work well in this slot. However, young adult cast members (college and high-school students) are difficult to find due to the start of the fall semester. In past seasons, it has also been a challenge to fully cast shows which require a large number of male actors. You may wish to consider a show with a smaller or primarily female cast for this slot.

Slot #4 – September 22nd to October 9th
Comedies have worked well in this slot (“Moon Over Buffalo,” “Rumors,” “Sylvia,” “The Foreigner”). The shows have been productions with small casts geared toward a more mature audience. This slot covers the prime foliage season so the audience tends to include older, more conservative visitors.

Holiday Slot – December, dates flexible
This is a potential new slot. We would like to see a small cast, family oriented, seasonal drama or musical in this slot. A concert version of a musical might be a more manageable production. Since the number of performances for this slot is limited, smaller budget shows would be preferred.

The above is what has worked in the past and does not preclude consideration of new ideas for shows, shorter runs, special theatrical events, etc. STG has sometimes extended its season by producing a fifth show with a short run (“Art” and “Midwives”).

The process for submitting a show proposal is:
1. Decide on the show and the core production team of a producer, director, and music director, if needed. If you don’t have all these personnel but are interested in the production, we might be able to help you organize a team. Because these core positions are very demanding and critical to the success of any show, each must be a separate person.

2. Send an e-mail to the Stowe Theatre Guild Show Selection Committee at info@stowetheatre.com or mail to

Stowe Theatre Guild,
P.O. Box 1381, Stowe, VT 05672

Include the following information:
- Name and author of the show you are proposing;
- Brief description of the show;
- Core production team members;
- 2010 season slot you prefer (also advise if you are flexible about taking another slot and if you can’t produce a show in a slot because of conflicts);
- Your contact information (name, address, e-mail, telephone number).

3. You may be asked to attend a show planning meeting to discuss your ideas for the show. Experienced producers and board members would be on hand to answer questions and help you create a proposed show budget. If needed, we may be able to provide some suggestions to help you find additional production team members (musicians, choreographer, stage manager, lighting, sets, sound, costumes, props, etc.) to complete your team.

4. Submit your proposed show budget along with a perusal copy of the script to the Show Selection Committee. If you don’t know how to obtain a perusal copy of a script and a score, e-mail the Selection Committee as soon as possible, and we will help you obtain one. If you’re proposing a musical, you will also need to submit a CD or cassette of the music from the show.

5. You may be asked to present your show proposal to the STG Board. The Board will listen to the presentations, select the best proposals for the available slots, and let you know the results soon after the meeting. Many factors influence the show selection including the other shows proposed, scheduling, casting issues, etc. If your show is not selected for the 2010 season, we urge you to
resubmit your proposal or a new proposal for another show for the following season.

Stowe Theatre Guild reserves the right to accept or reject any proposal submitted and to continue to solicit proposals until all the slots are satisfactorily filled. The Stowe Theatre Guild Selection Committee looks forward to hearing from you.
