NINE, first produced in New York in 1981, was a TONY award winning show directed by Tommy Tune and starring Raul Julia. The show is loosely based upon the life and times of Federico Fellini, the great Italian film director. While the show has a central focus on the life of "Guido Contini," the power of the show resides in the women and chorus that are a part of his everyday life. From his mother to his wife to his mistress to his producer to his chief critic we see Contini enveloped in a complex geometric pattern that passes back and forth between reality and what he wishes his reality to be.
With a score written by Maury Yeston the cast has an opportunity to test and challenge their musical talents. While the show has one male lead it offers women a diverse group of characters to choose from. All together there are eight female leads and major chorus roles for 12 more women. In addition to Guido there will be roles for up to five additional men. The show also needs four boys who can sing soprano. A special note about the chorus, this is one of the most challenging and enjoyable shows for a chorus that we have ever seen. It's diverse, its complex and it's fun!
